IMPRESSIVE 13 INCH ZUNI CARVED JET BUFFALO INLAID LIGHTNING HEARTLINES SCULPTURE
The massive scale of this Zuni Fetish Sculpture, which weighs over 8 pounds, is something I’ve never seen before!
It was carved sometime in the second half of the 20th century.  It is signed, but I do not recognize the line with arrow symbol used (see pics).
The rarity of this item more than makes up for the break and subsequent repair that cannot be seen unless under close inspection.
SYMBOLISM:
“Very impressive large buffalo Hand Carved from jet with coral eyes and horns. Si: wolo (Zuni for buffalo) are associated with the attributes of abundance, emotional courage, good fortune, steadfastness, and endurance.
The Heartline symbolizes the life force of the animal.
It is depicted as an inlaid line in the shape of an arrow.
The Heartline begins at the mouth where breath gives life and points to the soul, or spirit, where faith and inner strength reside.
A Fetish is an object believed to have magical powers.
It may be of any form or material, however, a fetish has one paramount purpose: to assist man against any real or potential problems of mind, body or universe.
Zuni use Jet as a standard stand alone material.
Jet stone is an organic rock which is said to provide spiritual guidance to achieve balance and harmony.”
Carved Jet with turquoise, coral, mother-of-pearl inlaid work.  Measures approximately 13.5” L x 9” H.  Vintage age - 2nd half 20th C.  Fresh to the marketplace.
